    She Taught Her Followers to Act Locally

    May 27, 2022 -Hazel Henderson, a self-taught environmentalist and futurist who became an apostle of the green economy and of socially responsible investing, and who popularized the slogan “think globally, act locally,” died — or “went virtual,” as she would have put it — on Sunday at her home in St. Augustine, Fla. She was 89.

    Feb. 4, 2021 (NY Times Climate Forward)-Paul J. Crutzen, a Dutch scientist who earned a Nobel Prize for work that warned the world about the threat of chemicals to the planet’s ozone layer and who went on to push for action against global warming, died on Jan. 28 in Mainz, Germany.

    Martin Stratmann, the president of the Max Planck Society, said in a statement that Dr. Crutzen’s work had led to the ban on ozone-depleting chemicals, “a hitherto unique example of how Nobel Prize-winning basic research can directly lead to a global political decision.”

    (NBC News), Oct. 8, 2020 -Mario Molina, winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1995 and the only Mexican scientist to be honored with a Nobel, died Wednesday in his native Mexico City. He was 77 years old.

    Molina’s family announced his death in a brief statement through the institute that carried his name. It did not give a cause of death.

    He won the prize along with scientists Frank Sherwood Rowland of the United States and Paul Crutzen of the Netherlands for their research into climate change.

    Molina and Rowland published a paper in 1974 that saw the thinning of the ozone layer as a consequence of chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, chemicals used in a range of products.

    Advocate for Clean Energy, Dies

    May 17, 2020 (NY Times Climate Forward- S. David Freeman, a folksy but driven “green cowboy” who worked in energy policy under three presidents, ran some of the nation’s largest public utilities and pushed for renewable energy, died on Tuesday in Reston, Va. He was 94.

    The cause was a heart attack, his son Stan said.

    Mr. Freeman combined a deep understanding of energy issues with a passion for renewable energy and conservation. He also had a prescient early focus on reducing global warming.

    John Houghton, Who Sounded Alarm
    on Climate Change, Dies at 88

    Aprl 23, 2019 (NY Times Climate Forward- John Houghton, a climate scientist and influential figure in the United Nations panel that brought the threat of climate change to the world’s attention and received a Nobel Prize, died on April 15 in Dolgellau, Wales. He was 88.

    The cause was complications of the novel coronavirus, according to his granddaughter Hannah Malcolm, who announced the death, at a hospital.
