  • • American Forests
    Roots Than Run Deep

Since our founding in 1875, we have been the pathfinders for the forest conservation movement. In the early 1900s, for example, we rallied forest advocates to champion creation of the U.S. Forest Service. In 2018, we won a decade-long campaign persuading Congress to provide stable funding for preventing and fighting forest fires.

Now we are focused on building a reforestation movement in America, from cities to large, rural landscapes. We all rely on forests in order to survive and thrive, given the power they have to filter our air and water, provide jobs, mitigate climate change and more. But our forests are being degraded and destroyed at a rapid pace and large scale.

If we take care of our forests, they will take care of us.

Are these human rights or environmental issues? Those of us who have been dedicated to protecting humans and those who have focused on the environment must recognize that we work at cross purposes if we do not work together.”

Climate change is the big environmental problem that humanity will face over the next decade, but it isn't the only one. Iberdrola takes a look at some of them — from water shortages and loss of biodiversity to waste management — and discuss the challenges we have ahead of us.

The third decade of the 21st century has begun and the environmental challenges we have ahead of us, set out in the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, are many. This global plan of action adopted in 2015 puts forward specific measures to achieve a world that is fairer, more prosperous and more respectful of the environment within ten years. In this regard, the UN itself warns that we are running late, and the question now is whether we still have time to save the planet.

  • • Ice911
95% of Earth's Heat Shield is Gone

Ice911’s solution can be thought of as a type of floating white sand. It’s made from a silicate glass which is mostly silicon dioxide (“silica”). Silica is a compound made of two of the earth's most abundant materials: silicon and oxygen. The mass of Earth’s crust is 59% silica, the main constituent of more than 95% of the known rocks.

This is a safe choice for animals and ecosystems because all life on Earth has co-evolved with it in various forms on land, in our rocks, and dissolved in our oceans. It is a safe form of the material, large, amorphous and round enough to not cause harm to living creatures or the environment. And this material is bright and reflective, not like a transparent glass lens, but like reflective white sand or snow.

    Conservation Strategies

To truly protect sea turtles around the world, many different countries and cultures must cooperate and share responsibility. International laws and agreements, research, and the work of dedicated organizations and individuals each must play a part. Long-term protection of sea turtles also means developing solutions that reduce reliance on management methods requiring direct human involvement — such as moving nests or raising hatchlings in captivity.

If sea turtles can not survive and reproduce on their own, without help from humans, then they are doomed. Feeding and nesting grounds must be protected, and a public wildlife conservation ethic must be fostered that can withstand gaps in government regulations, pressure from private interests, and changes in the political climate.
